About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. It introduced the concept of decentralised digital money, allowing peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries.
The coin serves as a store of value and a medium of exchange, often referred to as 'digital gold'. It operates on a decentralised ledger called the blockchain, which records all transactions across a network of computers worldwide.
In India, Bitcoin is classified as a Virtual Digital Asset (VDA). This means any gains from Bitcoin trading are subject to a 30% tax, with an additional 1% TDS applied on transfers. Many Indian investors buy Bitcoin through exchanges like WazirX or CoinDCX, or via USDT P2P in INR.

How Bitcoin Works
Bitcoin uses a consensus mechanism called Proof of Work (PoW) to secure its network. Miners compete to solve complex mathematical problems, and the first to solve it gets to add a new block of transactions to the blockchain and is rewarded with newly minted bitcoins.
The supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, making it a deflationary asset. This scarcity is designed to mimic precious metals and protect against inflation. As of now, over 19 million bitcoins have already been mined.
Transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called the blockchain. This ensures transparency and security, as altering any part of the blockchain would require consensus from the majority of the network.
What Moves the Bitcoin Price
The price of Bitcoin is influenced by factors such as its limited supply, increasing adoption by institutions and individuals, and its use as a hedge against inflation. Regulatory developments also play a significant role, as seen in India's taxation policies.
Market liquidity, driven by trading volumes on exchanges globally, affects Bitcoin's price volatility. Additionally, its status as the most recognised cryptocurrency makes it a benchmark for the broader crypto market.

About 95.7% of Bitcoin's maximum supply of 21,000,000 BTC is in circulation. The remaining 4.3% — roughly 903,585 BTC — has yet to enter the market, a potential dilution of up to about 4% in the token count if it is all eventually issued.
Its market cap ($1.67T) and fully-diluted valuation ($1.67T) are close, so most of the supply is already circulating and future dilution is limited.
